17 volumes, softcover, staple-bound, 30 x 26 cm each. Frieze, London, 1991 - 1994.
The first 17 issues of Frieze magazine, including the original pilot issue. Each approximately 50pp, fully illustrated throughout. Launched in 1991 by Amanda Sharp, Matthew Slotover and Tom Gidley. These early issues focused at first almost entirely on the new art being made in London at the time, issue 1 featuring a butterfly work by Damien Hirst on its cover, though by 1993 the scope of the editorial remit had expanded and began to include international contemporary art more generally. Issue 1 also included Angus Fairhurst’s prank ‘Gallery Connections’, in which the artist connected two galleries’ phones to each other. In 2003, the magazine served as the basis for the Frieze Art Fair, which continues to take place annually in London and now has editions in LA, New York, Seoul and Abu Dhabi.
